Music Moment: Heroin In Tahiti, “Death Surf”, and Italian “Hauntology”

Noms….

A little bit busy so a slightly different music moment for y’all this evening while i write, transcribe and put on my best “Spider Jerusalem with a Bacon Grease and Doughnut addiction” look, while listening to some minimal techno from Silent Servant.

So Heroin In Tahiti. Catchy name. Even catchier music. Very gothic and ladened with a Polynesian ocean death vibe to it. Think of the OST to “Surf Nazis must Die” directed by Argento when he was good. The guys at CIelandic collective VEBETH would be very much into these guys, especially the track “Sartana”.

Funny enough. in a strange type of synchronised coincidence, this lot have been mentioned by Blackest Ever Black and Simon Reynolds.

From his post

Speaking of dark things, Valerio Mattioli, who writes for LaRepubblicatells me that there is an Italian counterpart to hauntology that was recently covered as part of an article in Blow Up (sort of Italy’s The Wire) on contemporary Italian occult psychedelia. The journalist Antonio Ciarletta, says Mattioli, enumerates its ingredients as: “local folklore, the popular spaghetti cinema of the 60s/70s (especially mondo movies, giallo, spaghetti westerns, cannibal movies etc), even Catholicism, and a typical ‘Italian vibe’ all around…. Many of the musicians openly mention composers such as Piero Umiliani, Ennio Morricone and basically the whole Italian soundtracks/library music school”

To me,” continues Mattioli, “what’s interesting in these bands, is that their kind of hauntology avoids the eerie and pastoral feeling of the English counterpart, as well as the pop-cheesy attitude of the American hypnagogic pop. On the contrary, their music is blatantly dark, esoteric and sometimes bloody, actually reflecting the ‘sun & violence’ culture which – despite the clichés – is a commonplace here. Of course, there’s the homage to a popular imagery which is deeply rooted here, and that somehow reflects the Italian identity better than your typical Venice postcard. But it’s also like saying that memories often can be nightmares, especially if you live in a country which is half Europe/half… well, Italy. Kind of Sergio Leone/Lucio Fulci induced nostalgia…

When you go back with your memories to the contemporary Italian golden age – to say, the 60s of the Dolce Vita etc – you can’t escape the ghosts of that same era: terrorism, urban favelas, corruption and so on. Even the big masterpieces of the Italian literature, TV and cinema typically deal with such atmospheres – they’re always bloody, violent, excessive. Somehow, the bands analyzed by Ciarletta are here to remind us that the Italian good old days (when future seemed possible) were a very depressed place, and that the present is filled with those ghosts…

…Bands operating in this zone include Cannibal Movie, Donato Epiro, In Zaire, Orfanado, Spettro Family, Heroin In Tahiti [Mattioli's own band], and on the “more ‘pagan-catholic folklore’ tip”, Mamuthones and Father Murphy . TheAwayTeam/Polysick are “a sort of modern Piero Umiliani” with projects lined up for 100% Silk, and Planet Mu. “Needless to say: all these artists form a sort of family, they’re all friends and do stuff together, they share projects and labels etc.”

Many of the bands mentioned in the last paragraph are on Mattioli’s own label BORING MACHINES, who have the brilliant Squadra Omega on their rosts. They’Re well worth checking out.

In the meanwhile here be the music….

Music Moment: Fabio Orsi, “Endless Autumn”

Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh…..

Well it’s the beginning of a new week. Last week was a complete write off thanks to my kitteh’s escapades. Oh and Aðalsteinn’s stag do, where i got to appreciate Sunn O))) in a whole new (and rather embarrassing) way. But fuck that, most of the toxins are leaching out of my system, and my cat is back safe and sound, although he does look a little messed up by the whole experience.

No matter. I have just type up a review which will probably be either the best, or most ludicrous, review i’Ve ever done. And it probably won’t get printed, but what the fuck, it had to get done in my head, and that’s all that matters.

and to help me along with all this deep though, some truly expansive and beautiful, post-rock/ambient drone soup courtesy of Mr Fabio Orsi. This is his current latest release “Endless Autumn” which was available for a while on bandcamp, but has strangely disappeared. Nevermind, it’s a wonderful piece of music that it seems the Italians can make with ease these days. Go and check out his other stuff. Me, i´m off to investigate some new Icelandic music.

Goodnight…

Music Moment: Squadra Omega, “Murder In The Mountains”

HIYAHHHHHHH!

So we were going to the cinema tonight to watch Thor, but Mrs Sex Farm had to work late (cos she slept in and stuff. HAHAHA!), so that was nixed. And then i got called into review a couple of bars at the last-minute. Of course it’s a Tuesday night so there was no hard partying, rampant lesbian sex (a lot of it happens apparently) or obscene underpant abuse occurring. But i filed my report like a good pro and have spent the evening looking at The Daily Shows Jon Stewart wipe the floor with FOX News’s Bill O’Reilly over their fake outrage of a rapper going to the White House. Man he stomped all over the old man’s feeble arguments. Surely charges must be brought or something, it was gruesome.

As for tonight’s music i turn to Jonny Mugwump and his exotic pylon radio show. Tomorrows show has two sets, one from skewed musician Dolly Dolly, the other from the Boring Machines record label. They’re an Italian label that specialises in music containing dark gothic stylings and vivid, visual stylings that bleed into the aesthetic. I knew of such acts as Mamuthones, Fabio Orsi and Father Murphy, but looking through their artist roster brought me to an outfit named SQUADRA OMEGA. They’re an ever morphing collective that throw themselves into free-form acid rock with a mix of Komische and freak out electronics that treats music as something to be destroyed, broken down and rebuilt into a shining psychedelic avatar. I’ve been listening to some of their stuff tonight and it rocks a big one, to the point where I’m now buying their self titled album. Here is one of the opus tracks from said album. A sprawling jam with elements of drone, jazz, post punk and ambient, with a little spoken word in the middle. It’s fabulously rich with layered sounds of haunted cathedrals, howling caves and giallo deaths in the mansion. Damn the Italians. Wonky at politics, but good at making music.

Goodnight…

Muisc Dump: Drink to Me “Brazil”

Good afternoon there my little mud butts….

Taking a break from my DIY chores. A shelf up here, a picture hanged there, a coat rack that took 12 attempts to put on the wall properly. don´t worry, it’s still just about in one piece.

But as it’s Monday, then it must be time for you to receive my joyous offer of free music. Yes, you are the baby chicks awaiting that meal, and i´m the mother regurgitating some half digested earthworms into your gullet. Yum!!

Ok this week i´ve got some lovely music from the land of pasta, fascism and defence orientated football. Yup Italy isn´t known for its wealth of new music (Italian piano house music? Pfft!), but once in a while a band comes along that takes your notice. And Drink to me are such a band.

I´ve been listening to their debut album for nearly 2 weeks now. I know absolutely bugger all about them, except that they are Italian (although they sing in English),. But they do a great line in pounding electro rock. Very psychedelic with more emphasis on crunching metallic synths for the riffs instead of guitars. It´s a little bit similar to Health, but a lot more catchy and poptastic, which is no bad thing.

Now, if this band were announced to play at Iceland Airwaves, then i would most definitely say that this would be a step in the right direction. I hope someone give the band a call to make it so….

You can try “Brazil” HERE

And then you can buy it HERE

Now where’s my hammer?…..
