Free Music Alert SPECIAL: The Joy Of Aural Sects!

I can’t believe it’s been ages since I did one of these posts!

But thankfully things have quietened down just a little on this front, I thought that now would be a good time to get you all filled in on some rather joyful music that’s out there, in the wild, fresh and free as the morning dew.

But in a change from the usual posts, I’ve decided to up the ante with a special spotlight focused on a particular netlabel that’s been producing some rather brilliant music for a long time now. Created in 2011, AURAL SECTS has been a label and collective that has been nibbling and picking away at the edges of the so-called “Post-Internet” with some relish for a while now. Rising in the middle of the primordial sound soup that was Witch House (Mental note to self – I must get a follow up post on Witch House v2.0 done these days) and other associated genres, they’ve grown and blossomed into one of the hottest burning netlabels online with releases that span from twisted trap rap and booming witch house, to some of the most melancholic trance music you’ve heard in years.

So in the interested of quality music writing, I got drunk and sent an expletive message to one of the label’s many hydra heads, Bunny Intonamorous, about the label and what drives them in this brave new world…

Tell us about yourself Bunny in excruciating detail. The who/hows/whats/whys of your life…

Hello, I am Bunny, I was born with a different name, but I like this one better. It was given to me by friends because I tend to just sit down and do very little, but then I was looking after a family pet that tried to suffocate me in the night with its arse so now I keep this name for the same reason that Batman calls himself that. To strike that same fear into the hearts and minds of my enemies. I’m 26 years young, and I am a music and info-addict. I live to ingest new information and music. I have a day job, but that’s not important, but I am also a musician (used to make avant-garde neoclassical music, traded the score for Ableton about a year and a half ago and… well put it this way, I’m getting better), labelhead, writer, DJ (HA! Everyone is a DJ these days), and now, an editor of a small philosophy and music blog.

How did you get started in this music lark in the first place?

I’ve always been an audio obsessive – an avid listener of EVERYTHING I can get my hands on. I decided on a whim to try to get into the practical side of things when I was 14, through education, and had a passion for writing avant-garde classical music, which I then studied, together with analysis throughout university… After that I got a bit bored with that and just went back to listening only until I found witch house, and got inspired by what seemed to be the punk DIY ethic of it all – use what you can to make something. It really inspired me to try to my hand at something relatively poppy (i.e. not alternating time signatures every bar and using 5-6 non-tonal scales in half-hour long works… 5 minute, 4 chord drag songs).

Aural Sects the label – Give us an overview/ ORG chart. Why did it start in the first place? what were the gaps that you wanted to fill with your ideas/desires?

We started it in the first place because it seemed like a lot of artists we thought were really, really good (like, the future of music good) weren’t getting the attention they deserved, and some of these people were our friends. We were all musicians ourselves, and we thought it’d just make sense if we all got together and focused on trying to get all this music out to a wider audience.

Since then, we’ve grown up a bit, and used/abused (depending on your outlook) our tiny, but growing position in a cultural scene, to push certain agendas that we stand for. We’ve started self-referring as “net-positive” since we try to actively encourage all the things that internet culture is built on – which can be traced back to the original hackers at MIT in the late 60s. Roughly this translates to: transparency (we always explain what we’re doing and why to people), virality (playing to the feed culture that the major social sites play to – we try to be a semi-constant feature in feeds, whilst avoiding repeating ourselves, which is what the graphical representations of tracks and EPs is on our page – it’s not just photosharing, it’s playing to the strengths of the feed), sharing our content as freely as possible, only charging for physical products (or things associated with physical products), a distaste for authority (which is why we try to have a fluid structure as a label – there are “labelheads” but anyone can be one, so long as they put the work in), AND, we cannot forget teh lulz.

How does aural sects decide on what music to publish on the label? Is there an overriding philosophy to what you guys so?

This is the hardest part to describe of what we do, really. Partly it’s logical – we don’t want our overall sound to be too clean, or too dirty (we like both the hi-fi dance stuff like VS//YOUTHCLUB and Rachel Haircut, and the dirtier hip-hop stuff like Thoed Myndez and Blam Lord). We do tend to pick up on artists that have a certain mindset though – nothing too backwards-looking, something unique and firmly based in one of several potential futures. I mean, all of our artists are aware of their roots. That’s important for any kind of artist. But I like to think we pick artists that aren’t afraid to gaze into the crystal ball and look towards what might happen in the future, too. Overall, we can kinda tell if an artist “belongs” with us or not. Some of our artists passionately get what we do, they chip in and help any way they can, and we love that. If I were a businessman I’d call it “synergy” but I’m not, so I’ll call it “us being on the same page”.

How have the label’s releases/ attitude changed since the early days. Do you think you are reflecting or helping to drive the changes going on the future-pop world?

We’re a lot more knowledgeable and critical about what we do now. We’ve had a few minor disasters in the past that we’ve definitely learned from, and we’ve learned that no matter how awesome we think we might be, no-one is going to come up and do you a favour or give you a leg up. I was discussing our current position with my friend and fellow labelhead, Joe, the other day, and he pointed out that unlike a lot of labels, we tend not to get overlooked on major platforms, and we’ve never been given a leg up, really, unlike some of our peers.
We’d like to think we’re making changes in the wider arena… but at the moment all we can do is support the general zeitgeist of “free music/art”. Our peculiarities don’t seem to be, so far, reaching a very wide audience, or affecting the way people experience musical culture.

Netlabels – Some say they help to cheapen music and the work of a musician by giving it away for nothing. What do you feel a netlabel such as Aural Sects provides to the role of music in general?

I can understand that point of view, although blaming netlabels is a bit much. Let’s not forget that it was listeners downloading shit for free that caused the collapse of the ’90s model. Let’s also take into account that this particular format has been dominant for the past 40 years ONLY and before that, throughout history, there’s been a variety of money/music/musician models. For me, our label is getting artists out there – we’re a platform to get musicians to the bread and butter of musicians’ paychecks these days, merchandise and touring. Also, the intention is to eventually (really far down the line!) to get all the artists who want to be on a physical, making money that way, onto physical media. There’s no sense in putting new music by relatively unknown artists behind a pay-wall that will ultimately only get pirated in a non-trackable way. At least this way, we can gauge an artists’ popularity and put them in touch with promoters relative to their size for gigs and the like, or in some cases, even organise a tour ourselves. We are actually in the process of organizing a full USA tour for five of our US artists, with assistance in each area, from local artists we’re friends with.

What’s so great about running a witch house netlabel?
Getting to hear new tracks by your favourite artists before release, getting to give advice to people on demos, the lulz to be had, and the weird and interesting ideas you encounter every day.

What’s not so great about running a witch house netlabel?
Comments sections, the “RPG Funk” factor, people giving you their stuff an hour before the release date – or giving it to you and saying they want it released that moment.

2013 – Already some interesting releases, but what’s the main object for Aural Sects?
The main object is just to grow, see how far we can take this, and see how far we can spread this music. I don’t think we’ll really think we’re a success until we have to have IRL offices.

Primer Time! – Tell us of 3 releases on the label and why people should download/listen to them.
AH SO DIFFICULT!Okay, I’m going to give my totally biased opinion, although in reality EVERY release has something for someone…

1) VS//YOUTHCLUB – WAVES EP. These are the gems of the UK side of AS (although one of the members is now Berlin based). Imagine the coolest, sleekest dance music you can, and then combine that with indie songwriting, and slick hi-fi sound. You have the unique futurist vision that is VS// right there.

2) Thoed Myndez – Candy Kisses EP: 5 solid tracks of production collaboration between the estimable veterans of the witch scene, Party Trash and Nattymari (who is one of the basic reasons that AS exists in the first place). They get some of the most interesting rappers around the scene to spit some hooks and verses on each track, creating perfect lo-fi, dirty southern, avant-garde hip-hop. Glorious stuff.

3) Psychic Rites – Psychic Rites EP. This explores the pop side of AS. Proper witchy dance-pop is probably the best way I can describe it. Impassioned and catchy-as-fuck choruses, and that cover art? DAYUM. They’re going on tour as part of the Aural Sects USA tour this summer. I so wish I could be there for what I’ve heard is a tour-de-force performance.

If you like the sound of the these three release, then AURAL SECTS have a metric ton of music that’s freely available at their BANDCAMP PAGE. Also check them out on Facebook as well. You will not regret this. Money back guarantee! etc, etc…

Free Music Dump: Totally natural, yummy aural goodness. Just like momma used to make…

Well you know that you’ve been neglecting your duties when you actually realise that it’S been so long since i last did one of these posts. And I know that you are so FUCKING DESPERATE to get your hands on some decent music after the truly bilious assault to our senses over the last week that was the Jubilee celebrations in the UK, and the Hljólmskálinn concerts at Harpa in Iceland.

So with this edition of the Free Music Dump we’re going to concentrate solely on Iceland and some other spooky sounds. I promise you won’t be disappointed….

OK first off is a little bit of cheating as the artist is a good friend and colleague of mine. SINDRI ELDON writes about music for the same paper as i do, the Reykjavik Grapevine. He has what you would call an acerbic wit, which means that loads of sensitive musicians hate his guts (it’s like being mauled by angry kittens). But that’s their problem as he’s bloody good, as his latest piece on Brian Ferry undoubtedly shows.

Sindri also makes music, and for he has decided to give away his latest release for your listening pleasure. Six tracks of blistering pop-punk brilliance, with him singing about such delights as being a beautiful failure, and his love of America and other stuff I’m not sure about (because it’s all sung in Icelandic, and my Icelandic music translation skills are not quite what they should be).

But the quality is there, believe me. And this is something that i think you should be listening to, to be honest. YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE!

Staying with Iceland, for our next musical gem, we’re getting somewhat darker and nihilistic, with the debut album from DYNFARI. A local duo, they make metal that is as cold and unsparing as the album picture suggests. Starting off with a sparse, sombre opening number, they launch into some evil, expansive black riffage that has to be heard to be believed. It is black metal but it´s definitely not the one-dimensional European stuff, taking on the expansive wilderness of Iceland as their inspiration point, similar in the way that Sólstafir used to. Expect some great things from these guys.

We now move away from Iceland, and into the ghostly electronic world for our next release, which is a 2 DP double-header, by RITUALZ and FUNERALS. titled “Hypermotion B” and “Hypermotion X”, together they make 8 tracks of New Yoik based grime house. The best way to describe it is if Bladerunner was set in NY instead of Los Angeles, by way of Akira, and this was the sound that the kids dance to while exploding their synapses on the latest designer drugs. I know, sounds brilliant doesn’t it? And once yu listen to it, you’ll (probably) agree with me on this as well…

Last, but definitely NOT least is the newest arrival from the magnificent AURAL SECTS label. I think i’m going to have to do a special profile on them soon, but for now, i give to your their latest offering, “Waves” by VS//YOUTHCLUB. A duo coming form the North of England, they explore the Witch House genre, but with emphasis on the House instead of the Witch. The four tracks contain a mix of spectral noises and  pumping dance beats. the outstanding track being “Infinity”, which has that minimal techno feel that you’d expect to heard from an abandoned urban area like Canary Wharf at 3am on a Saturday morning. Not bad for a debut release. If you want to download a copy, visit the bandcamp page…

My GOD that is a lot of top quality free music we have there. I think this should keep you going for a while. Happy listening children….

Free Music Dump: Fresh and Streaming, Totally 100% Organic n’ Stuff….

So as you can tell, things have been a tad quiet this week on the blogging front. A mix of work and fleshworld crises have conspired to give this blog a case of the tumbleweeds.

But what better way to entice all those fair weather readers back by offering them some TOTALLY FREE MUSIC that won’t see them undergoing a full on body cavity search by MIAA, STEF or any other copyright protection agency that you choose to mention.

So let’s get right down to it…

First up is the EP “Little Bits” by Chicago band MAGIC CITY. Some chiming, clanging dream pop that’s very put together if i say so myself. Has a nice post-cocteau Twins feel to it. With spring round the corner, this’ll be a good little addition to your playlist.

Next in our selection is an interesting gem by San Francisco solo artist FOIE GRAS. Here’s we have simple sparkling shimmering high-end drones that offer a tempting mediation on summer cityscapes at 5am on a Sunday morning, when the only people you’Re likely to see are clubbing casualties trying to get home, joggers in the park, the odd homeless person and elderly dogwalkers. Suffering a comedown? then listen to this…

After all those simmering ambient drones, time to perk things up a little bit with some daytime electro. And for that we have “Al Bum’s” by COOLIO FRANCO. Not much info on this person, except to that they’re from New York, but the album has some lovely blissful electro beats. Sometimes you don’t have to spend the day listening to stuff that propels you to destroy beautiful things. sometimes you want to listen to music that has a nice “whoosh” effect on you. Al Bums’s has that feel. Music for Friday afternoons when you’ve left work early and you’ve just been paid.

Last, but by NO means least is an album from a totally special guy. My good friend Bram E: Gieben has release some new tracks under his alter ego TEXTURE. the man is a fucking tyro. Here’s the blurb from his soundcloud…

Texture is an emcee / vocalist based in Glasgow, Scotland. He is a member of the Chemical Poets, co-curator of Black Lantern Music, and co-host of the Shallow Rave podcast. He has written about music since 2005 for The Skinny, Weaponizer, Dangerous Minds, Clash and other blogs and magazines.

That makes me tired just reading it! Well his latest release sees him tap into his Witch Haus reserves for the aural Sects label to produce some groggy, dispersed sounds and beats. Cracked music for cracked minds. Make sure you take drugs when listening to this. That’s an order!

Right that should see everyone flocking back to these shores! I welcome the hits! It validates my existence!!!

Music Moment: SIΔMESE NOIR, “Eros”

BoingBoingBoing…..

So some real work has been conducted down here at the farm. My interview from yesterday has been typed and is now with the dark demon of the typeface (or as i like to call him, Haukur), so that’s one bit of stuff off my mind. Am now thinking about what to do with my time this weekend as Mrs Sex farm is apparently off to see her friend up in he the north. Her friend also works at another sex farm that cares for mutant two-headed sheep, where one head looks like Jónsi while the other head looks like the lead singer from Nickleback. you really want to love to do that kind of farming.

As befits downtown Reykjavik, there’s quite a lot to do out and about this weekend, so I’ll make a decision nearer the time. But for now i’ll just be listening to music and slowly let my neurons shutdown to “neutral”

But not before we get tonight’s music up and running. Have been listening to a lot of new witch house stuff today and over the weekend, but i came across a fan video to the track “Eros” by SIΔMESE NOIR. SN is the alias for a mysterious New York based solo artist who makes music that could be classed as witchery House stuff, but the heaviness and noise is emphasised more in the rhythm than in the synths. Eros for example, has a viciously dirty and distorted bass beat that belies the distant icy vocal samples and near ambient synth sounds. A malevolent children’s lullaby is ever there was one. Oh and his entire discography can be downloaded for free at bandcamp. The man is a downtempo Santa Claus!

Goodnight

Music Moment: Elekseveneks “Other Side”

gogogogogogooogooooGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!…..

I’ve listened to far too much polished nu-yankee indie music today. So tonight I’ve been reading Grant Morrison comics while listening to hauntology and witch house music to get the inner paranoid going in my Id.  And here is a likely candidate for Witch House track of the day “Other Side” by ELEKSEVENEKS. Lets see….

Does it have slow throbbing drone-y bass beats? Yes!

Does it have hyper-echoed female vocals that don’t real sing any words? You Betcha!

Does it have overly simplistic plastic hi-hat beats as a counter to the woozy bass? Most definitely!

Doe the video contain disturbing warped images from battered old 3o-times-copied-over VHS editions of 70′s Mondo exploitation/horror movies. Does a bear shit in the woods?

Would watching this video while high on Ketamine, and having a baby crying in pain in the background be the only way this could be even more disturbed? I suppose so…..

If you do like what you hear, then this album and all their available back catalogue is free to download at their Bandcamp. Creepy fucks……

Goodnight….

Scary Music Nugget: †‡† “SAY YOU WILL”

this was dumped on my Twitter feed about an hour ago. I think †‡† (or rrritualzzz as they’re known on their MySpace) are one of the best of the so-called “witch house” genre as it feels and sounds like they’ve put a bit of thought and craft into their tracks. This one is a cover of Kanye West’s track of the same name. The sound of modernHalloween….

Mixtape Hell: Halloween Special….

If you are having a bit of a Halloween party this weekend and you need some slightly spooky music, then there are a few mixtapes that have come across my RSS Feeder that may at least make your evening a little more atmospheric. And there is no sight of the fucking “Monster Mash”, “Thriller” or “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”

first up is the annual Halloween mixtape from that well-known free mp3 blog Gorilla Vs Bear. This is a rather good mixtape that has a mixture of retro spooky electronics from Delia Derbyshire and Sleep ∞ Over to paranoid dirty dub of Forest Swords and the always excellent James Blake. A well thought out mix….

Down the Gorilla Vs Bear Halloween Mix HERE

Another interesting little mix can be found over at the blog Killed in Cars (great name). Their Halloween mix, titled “The Witching Hour” is very much aligned towards the current spooky “witch House” genre, so we have the likes of †‡†, White Ring, †NO VIRGIN† and GuMMy†Be▲R!. No i can’t pronounce those names either. Expect lots of slowed down medicated vocal samples, woozy synths and memories of bizarre early 80′s vampire movies….

Download the Witching Hour HERE

Last & certainly not least is the Halloween podcast from Mad Decent. If you think that the above music is all a bit too slow and wimpy and you want to lose your shit with plenty of industrial EBM madness, then you should listen to this. The main culprits in this mix are the likes of Skinny Puppy, 1000 Homo DJs, NiN, Front 242 and Ministry (before they went all metal). black PVC underpants are a must….

Download DJA Presents – Sounds Like Skinny Puppy & Gives Me Nightmares HERE

Now that I’ve got the music sorted, now i have to sort out my stalker/rapist outfit for my party. A Balaclava and duct tape is a must….

The new genre of “Witch House” (or when Hipters can´t Triforce…)

OK this is going to be the last stuff i´m going to post on Lo-Fi/ hauntology twiddly nonsense for a while. After this it will only be Severed Crotch and Justin Bieber on infinite repeat…. for the next 3 months!

So you know how it is. You´re riding the music blog zeitgeist and you notice a trend forming among certain bands that share a similar aesthetic, sound and image. It has already been given a genre title and you start to put some notes together. Even this weekend you think to yourself “hey i should write a post about it on the farm”. And THEN your idol and general bastard of the skies, Warren Ellis goes and posts about it before you do! with a follow-up post about it the day after. That man is seriously ruining my life from a great distance!

Of course i´m talking about the NEW genre hitting the hipster internet music circles and it has been termed “witch house” (or Witch Trance, Witch Dub, Ghost Trance, Haunted Hypnagogia, depending on which day of the week it is.)

What is this “Witch House” you may ask. Well it´s basically is a hotchpotch of slightly different sounds. Low end squelchy darkwave bass synths, processed beatbox beats on a syrupy loop, slowed down and manipulated voice samples and vocals, a dash of dissonant ambient noise, a pinch of shoegaze and topped off with some serious epilepsy inducing videos and images!

I first became aware of this darker hynpagogic sound last year when i picked up 2 albums, “megafauna” by Yoga and “Salem EP” by Salem. Yoga has that sound that you would get from those early 80´s Italian zombie horror movies, but smeared and stretched with a layers of processed dark ambient noise over it, a bit like it was a really bad tape recording you took from the TV in 1983. Salem on the other hand, is a simple downtempo synth song with crunchy, distorted beats and echoed, spaced out vocals.

Over the last few months, this area of music has grown into a bit of a burgeoning community with it´s own LAST.fm group with about 30 linked acts. there is also a record label (Disaro Records) that release stuff from the majority of said acts.  So what the main connecting strands with witch house then?

So $%/(/(%&/⊆ℜ▲▲ is my new band name. Want me to spell it?

The first thing you notice are the band names. Some names are fairly normal and have an occult connotation. Salem, Modern Witch, Mater Suspiria Vision, white ring, etc…. But most of the bands have an obsession with using obscure symbols and syntax in their names. For example, you´ve got PWIN ▲▲ TEAKS, tw<TITght>ZoNeGr†LLGR†LL †‡†oOoOO///▲▲▲\\\ and ℑ⊇≥◊≤⊆ℜ. And there are plenty more wilfully abstract names like that. It all ends up looking like the /b/ forum on 4chan. There are a couple of reasons for this methinks.  One is that you can´t search these names up on google (try it. You won´t get very far), which create a sense of ambiguity and mysteriousness. (or perhaps they’re just being pretentious cocks). The second is that it gives the look of ancient pagan symbols and hieroglyphs, linking back to this whole Witch house terminology.

The second thing about witch house is it´s use of imagery and video in conveying it´s message. Most of these artists won´t let their faces be shown, often blurring out their faces and using photoshopped images. They also splice symbols of paganism and Satanism with religious and nature images so that their MySpace pages often resemble a freaking nightmare of bleeding collages that even my tumblr feed would never see in a million years. This also occurs with their videos, mixing segments of trashy horror films and 70´s sleazploitation with warped new age graphics and weird pagan symbols. Often they resemble something dredged from the dark depths of Andy Warhol and Derek Jarmans waking dreams.

Now some of this witch house genre i don’t care for and most of it will surely fall by the wayside before the year is out (in particular i didn´t take to modern witch). But some of it isn´t too bad (Tearist, ///▲▲▲\\\ and †‡† are worth a listen). i do feel that this is certainly the start of the bridging of all that Hypnagogic wilful lo-fi noise and the nod to occult folklore that occurs in hauntology. i definitely expect the likes of pitchfork and Wire magazine to go apeshit over this stuff this summer months and announce it “the future of music”. I don´t think my mother will go for it though…
