Iceland Airwaves: Rock like a motherfucker apparently…

18 Sep

Wow i think it has been a couple of weeks since i did my last Iceland airwaves dispatch. Since then a few things have happened. A couple of interviews and album reviews mostly, but i have also been roped in to help out with copywriting the text for the programme. This has meant that i am now party to the actual full line up. Luckily just about every one of note has already been announced. There are one or two acts still not announced, but i have been sworn not to tell you. It’s more than my life is worth apparently (and that is not a lot when you think about it).

But there have been a whole load of bands announced in the last couple of weeks. And the one thing that has been included is a few more guitars and a little bit of noise. At last! At one point i was thinking that the organisers had some weird kind of allergy to lacquered wood and sexy noises. But they have yielded to common sense and got some good old-fashioned guitar madness. So let’s look at some of the bands that are playing….

200 (FO): the slightly younger cousin of 300. Now 200 are from the Faroe Islands, which is also the home of Festival favourites, Boys in a Band. If you were here during airwaves ’08, then you’ll know that their set at the Art museum on the Saturday just destroyed all the other acts, including the likes of CSS and Vampire weekend. So a lot is riding on these boys. Like BIAB, they mine that classic AC DC/Cult/Stooges hard rock sound for all that it’s worth. But sometimes you just need a pounding 4X4 beat and thundering bass to lose your inhibitions. Alas no decent videos exist in the web worlds, so go to their Myspace and listen to the molten metal!

Autodrone (US): Another thing the festival was missing was the moody darkness. The festival lineup seemed more concerned with Dayglo shades, happy pills inserted as suppositories and moonbeam smiles. Autodrone are none of things thank fuck. As their name suggests, what they are is a bleeding wall of distorted guitar noise with gothic female vocals and lyrics. Imagine if my bloody valentine started writing songs for children’s cartoons. I might not get Zola Jesus or Fever Ray this year, but these guys will make up for it….

Selvhenter (DK): Now i haven´t heard of these guys and when i first heard their music, i thought airwaves had made some sort of mistake. Why is that? Well they do really hard, fast lo-fi punk/hardcore that could only have been made in a schoolkids head in 1981. It just sounds so totally out-of-place with about every single foreign act on the roster. But this is a good thing in my book. But will the hipster crowd allow themselves to have a proper mosh and risk ruffling their asymmetrical haircuts? We can only hope….

Simon Says No (NO): Norwegians playing something that isn´t black metal? come on! Oh, wait apparently this thing is possible apparently. While i think it would have been better to have the band name changed to “Computer says No”, SSN are a lovely throwback to those full on 90’s days of the Shoegaze noise of Ride, Swervedriver and rocked out spiritualized, but with all the modern knowingness that comes with hindsight. And a beefed up rhythm section as well…

Ok that’s your lot for now. I´m off to wake up Sigga and go and do some shopping. then. Have. Beer and sort out the jukebox….
