Iceland Airwaves ’10: What?? I’m not paying 15,000ISK for a fucking ticket!

07 Oct

Now Iceland airwaves will be a decadent orgy of bacchanalian proportions. Watch Retro Stefson play their new material while performing a sacrifice using a live chicken! Stare agog as Ghostigital torture small children with their new jazz funk sound! And gasp in horror as i reenact the bar dancing scenes from the film “Coyote Ugly”  in Bakkus (again)…..

But for a lot of people the thought of paying 15,000ISK for an Airwaves ticket, even if Robyn is playing is just madness as they view it as just a bit too expensive. But one part of airwaves that’s always popular is the Off Venue schedule. This year there will be several places where both Icelandic and foreign acts will be baring their souls and naked flesh for the paying public. Oops wait, a slight mistakes there… YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY! Yup the off venue schedule is completely free which means  you can still get to see most of the bands and not have to pay a god damn krona for it. Call it Kreppacore music if you want.

So what is this years schedule? well you can click on the picture below for the full schedule…

Well this year, as with the main venues, the Off venue schedule is the biggest yet more acts playing more venues. In particular, there are several shows that i recommend that you check out….

Nikita on Saturday: the Nikita boutique on Laugarvegur has a large backyard ares with a raised decking stage. Now if the weather holds off, and if you aren’t going to the Blue Lagoon, then i suggest going to here instead. Orphic Oxtra, Rival Consoles, Nóra, Yunioshi (UK), Reykjavík! and HAM will be playing. A definite highlight!! (note: I should invite some of the bands to my flat as i live round the back to the shop!)

Havarí on thursday: At the downtown record store/art gallery, you have 3 different styles of music in the form of expansive indie film soundtracks (Film), Scratchy old school post punk (SH Draumur) and weird lo-fi French Folk Rap shit (Gablé). Also the people that work there are your resident experts in Icelandic music and are also very friendly. and there’s free coffee as well!

All of Hressó: The former information centre has been an airwaves venue in the past and this year will be one of the premier off venue locations. Each day showcases the best from the Festival whether it’s the French showcase on Friday (chateau Marmont & Mondkopf) or the Canadian showcase on Saturday (Timber Timbre, Diamond Rings, Snailhouse, Basia Bulat, Miracle Fortress & Think About Life). the beer is a little expensive, but it’s definitely worth it…

so read the schedule and you’ll probably find yourself in tears while punching yourself in the face for being so stupid at having bought a ticket in the first place….
