i was going to post something completely different tonight, but that was before we received the sad shocking news that Icelandic DJ & Musician BIOGEN died suddenly last night. Currently details are still sketchy as to the whats whys and hows, but suffice to say that this has shocked the electronic music scene in Iceland in a big way.
To those non-icelanders who don’t know, Biogen (aka Sigurbjörn Thorgrimsson) was the epitome of a pioneer. Along with a few other hardy souls, he managed to kick-start the techno/rave scene in the 90’s with the creation of the Ajax Project with DJ Thor. They produced the well-known Hardcore hit “Ruffage” from the “Mach III” EP, which they gave to Jungle DJ Goldie to plug it in the UK, only for him to then claim that he wrote the thing! Cheeky git!
After the Ajax Project, he took on the moniker Biogen in 1996 ( he also used the aliases Babel and Aez) and released his debut album in 1998 on the German label Elektrolux. He then helped found the Thule Record Label, where he produced numerous tracks, albums and remixes for the Likes of Sigur Rós and Múm. In the last few years, he was part of the electronic community Weirdcore, helping to showcase new and left field acts in the Icelandic Music scene.
I didn’t know Biogen all that well, only meeting in passing a few times. but i did attend a few Weirdcore nights and he had a reputation of putting on music that was both well received and of an exceptional quality, be it jungle, electro to ambient. Also his knowledge of old school techno and hardcore music was immense, as myself and a few others found out last weekend when, being a little bored, ended up bombarding each other over the internet with old school techno videos that lasted the best part of an hour and a half.
I do know that the scene is a lot worse off now that he is gone. Damn this whole things sucks so much. Biogen, RIP
