Notes From an Arsehole: Reykjavik Music Mess

18 Apr

so it’s the day after the night before and most of us have had a chance to wind down and take stock of the inaugural Reykjavik Music Mess festival. We’re currently waiting for the rest of the reviews (for saturday and Sunday) to come out. but here are some random notes from that weekend….

– Despite the usual organisation hassles (only managed to work out where we were going and

what we were doing a couple of hours before the festival the main parts of the festival seemed pretty well organised. Which as it’S a lot smaller than the likes of Airwaves should be easy to do.

 Performances

– The funny thing about the festival was that there weren’t many bad performances at all. Nearly everything i saw was very good. But the big winner by a mile was FOSSILS. While my review of their performance on Friday seemed a bit ambivalent, i saw them again on Saturday (to only about 15 people!) and they were just simply amazing. And they were such total gents afterwards, even when i quipped to the drummer that he looked like he had come from the Danish Special Forces in the 60’s.

– Other special mentions should go to SWORDS OF CHAOS (Friday), NIVE NIELSEN (KEX hostel, saturday), AMFJ (Saturday), and (i shit you not) LÁRA RUNARS (sunday).

PLACES

– The Kex Hostel common area is brilliant and the toilets are weird!

ATTENDENCES

– The only main downer to RMM was the lack of people attending some of the gigs. For most of saturday evening at the Nordic House there were no more than approx 20 people there. While NASA barely seemed half full. Perhaps some people were turned off by paying 7,00oISK for a ticket for bands they’ve seen before. Also there was a lot of other things happening that weekend as well that seemed packed. President Bongo of Gug Gus DJ´d at Bakkus on Friday and when i went to check it out, the place was heaving. But that was for free. Bugger.

PEOPLE

Some of the interesting people i met over the weekend.

– SAMARÍS!! Yes , as it was tweeted i actually run into the programmer/electronics guy Þórður Kári from Samarís at Nordic House. It all actually turned out into a very reasonable discussion (dammit!). We calmly stated our cases as i explained our ire as to their winning Musiktilraunir and why we said what we said, while he gave a good account to his music and what he was trying to do (we both agreed he needs more dub!). Even though I’m still not convinced of their current sound, we came away with both our integrities intact, although his friend was a little more animated (“Tell me ONE band who do what Samarís do!!”). And it’s also good to know that he won’t really be taking much notice of the rants of a couple of bitter and twisted cynics.

– JOHN ROGERS from Brainlove records again! He was in town doing some PR work for it and covering it for some UK magazines. A lovely man and a scholar and a wit.

– The nice German tourists and journalists who i took on the guided walk around downtown Reykjavik. They saw everything, from “Cat City”, to Harpa and Hjartatorg, to a major traffic accident and threatening street drinkers. Kristjan, in his impeccable rock and roll manner was 30 minutes later, but he gave us some lovely stories.

– I met TANYA POLLOCK (from Weirdcore, Anonymous and PLX) for the first time. We both had a fair bit to drink and spoke a lot about music and music criticism. Man she is passionate about the music. Also wore a rather cute hoodie if i barely remember. And speaking of remembering…

BOOZE

– Yeah i didn’t feel too well on Sunday. Not surprising since i managed to drink so much booze (first at KEX hostel then at the “Koddi” art exhibition opening at the living at museum, THEN at the Nordic house), by the time i got to NASA things had pretty much become a Last Exit To Brooklyn style descent into madness and self-destruction. I almost certainly pissed off a good load of people and i’M bracing myself over the next couple of weeks for the inevitable “Bob you are a fuckwit/idiot/thief/delete as appropriate”. Yup i’m sure it was fun, but i think that for the good of my karma and social standing (ha!), i think i’m going to knock this type of thing on the head for the forseeable future.

So there you have it. Another music festival done and dusted thank god. I will NOT going going to ALDREI FÓR ÉG SUÐUR as i will be gaining happy points and some proper rest at my in-laws in the south. Next will probably be Eistnaflug…
