OK, just to let you know that for this weeks installment, we’re not messing around here.what i have for you is not just your usual run of the mill 70s zombie movie, or a quaint little mexican vampire thriller or, even something by David Cronenberg. No, for this weeks edition of the Sunday Cult film corner, and continuing in our month-long horror quest, we have pure unadulterated Uber-cult movie PLATINUM (gold is so last year).
So prepare to hold onto your hair as, Ladies and gentlemen, I give to you WILD ZERO.
Wild Zero is a horror zombie comedy from Japan directed by Tetsuro Takeuchi and start cult Japanese garage punk rock group Guitar Wolf (who sports the members, Bass Wolf, Drum Wolf and Guitar Wolf). The story (if you can call it that) tells of Ace, Guitar Wolf’s biggest fan who is on his way to a Guitar Wolf concert when an alien invasion hits earth, which causes the dead to rise as flesh eating zombies. the rest of the film has the band and Ace getting involved in outlandish escapades with the evil rock managers out for revenge, gun-toting women and lots of blood and violence. Can Ace survive and rescue his girl (who may also be a boy!?)?
All i can say about wild Zero is that it’s one of those films you have to see at least once in your life. In a slightly similar vein to other oddball “music band” comedies such as Leningrad Cowboys Go America”, it’s just so weird and completely OTT all you can do is just along with the ride. the film also taps directly into Japan’s love of retro and trash culture. Guitar Wolf alone, with their leather, greased hair, cigarettes, and worship of “Rock And Roll” are perfect examples of this. But their music and live performances look like so much fun, with the overdriven guitars mental, drumming and flames shooting out of everything!
so you know what to do. Get a your hair slicked back, chug a bottle of Jack Daniels and take part i the crazy rock and roll rider that is Guitar wolf.
ROCK AND ROLL WILL NEVER DIE!! DO IT!!
