Sorry for being so lazy over the weekend. Succumbed of that common complaint of “Abusing too many free beers,” again. Apologies, etc, etc. Also spent some time in the poisonous clean air of the country in on of those rather luxurious summerhouse jobbies with some friends of Mrs Sex Farm and mine. This meant about half a tonne of BBQ?d livestock flesh followed by myself and Petur sculling umpteen beers in a hot tub. Apparently this is what the entitled class of Iceland like to do, blah.
And the fat bastard known as “Our Cat,” has gone missing again. Bugger
But now I’m back and sort of back to normal. Here’s a track that will take you places. I admit I haven’t played any CULT OF LUNA for what seems like an eternity. But then I read the this month’s instalment of the ever brilliant Columnus Metallicus over at The quietus. And they have a new album out called ‘Vertikal.’ Hmm… this piques my interest. I wonder if it’s as cold and brutal as their last album, ‘Eternal Kingdom’? Lets get straight to the YooToobs to find out. And first up on the search is this monstrous 18 minutes epic.
OOF! that’s a daaaaaark opening minute or two that would give Lustmord a boner. Heavy on the atmospherics and the slightly scratchy industrial clicks. And after the hushed fragile guitars for several minutes, that is one thuddering, relentless central riff you have there. Even with the slight wubby electronics in the background, this track doesn’t veer to much into post-metal wankery. It’s keeping all the main things simple and correct. Apparently this album takes its cues from the film ‘Metropolis,’ and you can certainly understand, the slight hint of industrial machinery and brutalised and mechanised humanity. Depressing in the best possible way.
